injury prevention | biomechs |  pro/elite work | back & neck | rehabilitation

EMPC’s team has particular expertise in the treatment of all types of sports injury. Members of our team also have particular sport related interests. We are also currently actively involved with Premiership & League Football Clubs & Elite Sport through UK Athletics and Sport England and Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

Early intervention is essential for all sports injuries if prolonged absence from activity is to be avoided. There are two main categories of Sports Injury

Traumatic Injuries
These sports injuries occur suddenly and there is usually instant pain. They occur as a result of impact or sufficient strain being placed on one or other of the body’s structures to cause instant damage. The are injuries such as muscle tears, ligament sprains or ruptures, muscle contusions (dead leg). Common site of injury are the hamstirings, achilles tendon, ankle and knee ligaments, groin area, shoulder, elbow and low back.

With timely physiotherapy and advice, these injuries can clear up quickly depending on their severity, usually without complication. Without the right treatment they can become persistent problems.

Physiotherapy for these injuries is aimed at reducing pain and swelling, making the healing process as fast as possible, rehabilitation and ensuring maximal fitness following injury.

Overuse/Repetetive Strain Injuries
These injuries come on gradually over a period of time. The strain on the body’s structures occurs steadily, below the pain threshold. By the time they become painful, the affected body part has been in the damage process for some time. They usually begin with some discomfort and steadily get worse. They are usually related to a repetitive action such as running or racquet swing.

Treatment for this type of injury focuses firstly on identifying the cause, with subsequent treatment of the cause rather than the symptoms alone. Special attention is given to individual biomechanics and training programmes.
